It’s hard to believe, but in just a little over a month, the Wii U will be released to the masses on November 18th. Because of this, a lot of ESRB ratings have been handed out for the Wii U launch titles, which you can see below:
*Minor spoilers ahead.
Warriors Orochi 3 Hyper – T (Mild Language, Suggestive Themes, Use of Alcohol and Tobacco, Violence) Ratings Summary: This is an action-fighting game based on characters from the Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors franchises. Players use swords, spears, and magic attacks to kill giant monsters and human enemies in frenetic hack-and-slash combat. Battles are accompanied by sword slashes, cries of pain, and colorful light effects. Cutscenes depict other acts of violence: warriors battling a giant serpent, dodging fireballs, or dueling with swords. During the course of the game, some women are depicted in revealing outfits; their breasts sometimes jiggle during cutscenes. In one sequence, the camera briefly pans down and focuses on a female warrior’s cleavage. The game also contains several alcohol references in the dialogue (e.g., “Nothing is better than enjoying a fine wine,” “I might’ve had a little too much to drink last night,” “I brought the wine to the party!”), and a few scenes depict characters drinking wine. Another sequence depicts a man smoking a pipe. The word “hell” appears in dialogue.
Scribblenauts Unlimited – E10+ (Cartoon Violence, Comic Mischief) Rating Also Applies To: PC
Ratings Summary: This is a puzzle platformer in which players assume the role of a boy tasked with lifting a curse that is slowly turning his sister to stone. As players explore side-scrolling environments, they solve puzzles and create customized objects to complete mission objectives (e.g., helping a character prepare for a date; capturing a dinosaur; rescuing a character in distress). By typing in whatever nouns they can imagine, players can create myriad objects or entities in the game world. By adding adjectives, players can also modify these nouns to create different word combinations, triggering brief, comical scenarios: a “homicidal house” that can attack a man; a “cannibal” that orders food at a diner; a “necrophagous bike” that can eat a corpse; a “suicidal house” that attacks itself with a knife. Players can also summon “cartoony” versions of bats, bombs, guns, and flamethrowers to destroy nearby objects or other summoned items. These triggered animations are minimally depicted and usually accompanied by musical notes, colorful flashes, or small puffs of smoke. If players wish, they may type in the word “vomit,” causing a beige-colored puddle to appear on screen; typing the adjective “flatulent” results in squishy sound effects.
ESPN Sports Connection – E Ratings Summary: This is a collection of sports games in which players compete in events such as baseball, soccer, football, and tennis. As players improve their skills in each sport, they can use experience points to unlock hidden rewards (e.g., character outfits/accessories).
ZombiU – M (Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Strong Language) Ratings Summary: In this survival horror game, players assume the role of London inhabitants in the wake of a zombie invasion. From a first-person perspective, players scavenge the city and use realistic firearms, explosives, and melee attacks to kill waves of zombies; battles are highlighted by loud shrieks, impact sounds, and large splashes of blood. Players can also perform finishing moves to dispatch downed zombies: stomping on/bashing in their heads in with a cricket bat. Attacks often result in decapitated/dismembered bodies, and dead enemies continue to incur damage when shot. The words “f**k” and “sh*t” can be heard in the dialogue.
Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed – E10+ (Animated Blood, Mild Cartoon Violence, Mild Language) Rating Also Applies To: PC, PS3, PS Vita, Xbox 360
Ratings Summary: This is a racing game in which players compete with Sonic the Hedgehog and other characters from the SEGA universe. As players speed through each themed track, they can bump into other vehicles and use various power-ups (e.g., firecrackers, cyclones, puffer fish, snowballs, bee swarms) to impede opponents’ progress; some projectiles result in colorful explosions, and vehicles often spin out or flip into the air when hit. In one battleship-themed level, realistic explosions can be seen in the background; another racetrack contains giant spider hazards that emit splashes of green liquid when struck. One character says “damn” during gameplay.
Rabbids Land – E10+ (Cartoon Violence, Crude Humor, Mild Lyrics) Ratings Summary: This is a collection of mini-games featuring mischievous rabbit-like creatures called “Rabbids.” Players can engage in various activities (e.g., trivia; navigating game boards; riding roller coasters) at an amusement park. Several interactive sequences depict Rabbids involved in comical/crude behavior: characters hitting each other; getting bonked on the head; launched into a cow’s posterior; electrocuted with laser blasters; set on fire; or squished beneath farm animals. These actions usually occur amid “cartoony” sound effects. Bathroom humor is also depicted in the game: Rabbids belching loudly; scratching their buttocks; urinating on a pole; and vomiting on a park ride. One mini-game depicts a brown coil icon that resembles animal droppings. A couple accompanying songs contain lyrics that reference alcohol (“I drink Cristal champagne”) and mildly suggestive material (“It’s crazy babe you look so good/Don’t mind if I creep up on you”).
